Five questions worth asking before you take any herbal formulation

Whether it comes from this clinic or anywhere else, a preparation you cannot ask these five questions about is one you should not be swallowing.

Herbal preparations are sold everywhere in Pakistan — in shops, at stalls, through Facebook pages and by relatives who mean well. Some are made carefully. Some are made by nobody in particular, with nothing printed on them, and the person selling it cannot tell you what is inside. These five questions separate the two.

1. What is actually in it, and how much?

A proper label lists its contents by name and by quantity — so many milligrams of each ingredient, against a stated basis such as per capsule or per ten grams. If a preparation will not tell you what is in it, no physician can tell you whether it is safe with what you already take.

2. Who should not take it?

Every real formulation has people it does not suit. Pregnancy and breastfeeding, high blood pressure, diabetes, blood thinners, a known allergy to an ingredient — these appear on the labels of the clinic's own products because they are genuine limits, not legal decoration. A preparation with no contraindications listed is not a preparation with no contraindications.

3. What is the dose, and what happens if I take more?

A stated dose is a stated dose. Doubling it does not double the benefit; with herbs that act on blood sugar or blood pressure, it can push a reading somewhere you did not want it to go. If nobody can tell you the dose, they cannot tell you the overdose either.

4. Where was it made, and when does it expire?

Batch number, manufacturing date, expiry date. These let a problem be traced back to a specific production run. Preparations sold loose from a jar, with none of that, cannot be traced at all — and you have no way of knowing how long they have been sitting in the heat.

5. Does the person recommending it know my history?

This is the one that gets skipped. A preparation that helped your cousin was chosen — if it was chosen at all — for your cousin's body, complaint and medication list. The question is not whether it worked for them. It is whether anyone has looked at your reports before suggesting it to you.

  • Composition stated by name and quantity
  • Contraindications printed, not implied
  • A clear dose and a clear maximum
  • Batch number, manufacturing date and expiry
  • Someone who has seen your history recommending it

Everything the clinic makes carries all five, which is why the full composition, indications, contraindications and precautions for each preparation are published on this site rather than kept behind the counter. You can read them before you decide, and show them to your physician.

If you are already taking something and you are not sure about it, bring the packet to a consultation rather than stopping abruptly or continuing quietly. Bring the packet, not a photograph of the packet.

  • What actually happens in a consultation

About fifty minutes, in a fixed order, ending with a plan on paper. Here is the whole thing, so nothing about the visit is a surprise.

  • What to bring to your first visit

The consultation starts from what is already known about your health rather than from scratch — but only if you bring the right things with you.
